The Rotaract Club of CEG Seeks to Redefine Humanity

The Rotaract Club of CEG wrapped up the events of the 2014-2015 year with the annual visit of the District Rotaract Representative (DRR), Rtr. PP. PHF Arjun Raja, to our college premises on the 11th of April. The event kicked off with the collaring of the Club President by the Sergeant At Arms and the collaring of the DRR by the District Sergeant At Arms, followed by the Invocation Song.

The President of RCEG, Rtr. Arunkumar delivered the Welcome Address to all present, welcoming the DRR to CEG and extolling the events organized by RCEG through the year. This was followed by the presentation of the Secretary Report by Secretary Rtr. Jagadeesh, which was submitted to the DRR and DRS.

The Secretary Report summarized the activities of the Rotaract Club, organized in the past year, highlighting key events such as Vizhithiru, Conclave, Sangarsh and various intra-college events.

The 12th edition of Vizhithiru, a career guidance and motivational programme targetting 11th grade government and corporation school students in and around Chennai, was held on 10th October, 2014 at Vivekananda Auditorium, CEG. Mr. Krishna Varadharajan, chairman of Idea Plus, Chennai and Ms. Masha Nazeem, a young Serial Innovator were the guests of honour, who enlightened the 600 students present at the event.  

Conclave 2015, intended to be a TED-style motivational talk session. Speakers included Mr. Siddharth Jayakumar, who had cleared his Economics degree with distinction despite being afflicted with cerebral palsy, Mr Shankar, Founder and Managing Director of Shankar IAS Academy, who endured much strife in reaching his current position. The inspirational Ms. Malvika Iyer, survivor of the 2002 bomb blast, spoke on her incredible journey through school and college, eventually becoming a social worker, motivational speaker and model for Accessible Clothing in India. Mr. Anshul Mishra, IAS, the role model and inspiration for several Civil Service aspirants, spoke on the importance of honesty, competition, courage and humility. Conclave ended with talks by Dr. Rajendran, one of the forefathers of surgery in the country and Ms. Suhani Shah, the renowned magician, illusionist, mind – reader and motivational speaker.

Sangarsh, an annual fund raising musical concert, was held on 20th March, 2015 at The Music Academy. Sangarsh ‘15 sought to raise funds for the treatment of children affected by Lysosomal Storage Disorder. While the audiences were entertained by the live performances of Pop Shalini, Vel Murugan, Manasi and Koushik, the speech by Dr.Sujatha and the words spoken by the children brought focus onto the terrible disease.

The year also saw events such as RCEG alumni meets, orphanage visits, talent hunts and more organized by the club within the college, which sought to reinforce the goals of the Rotaract Club. ​

The Report was followed by the announcement of the Upcoming Board for the year 2015-2016. Ms Sushmita was appointed the President, while Mr. Joseph Pravin was appointed Secretary and Mr. Mathivaanan was appointed the Treasurer.  The gathering was then addressed by the DRR, who appreciated the efforts of the club, and encouraged them for the coming year. The day’s events were concluded with the Vote of Thanks by Secretary Rtr. Jagadeesh, and the singing of the National Anthem.  

Speaking to the Guindy Times, the incoming President of the RCEG, Ms Sushmita said

“The Rotaract club is a community which basically focuses on service with the perfect blend of fun and friendship through fellowship. It is more of a family, a family of friends. As history portrays, next year also we have planned to travel in a successful path with zeal and confidence! There is no bound to RCEG's innovation & hope it turns out to be successful in this coming academic year too.”

We wish the Rotaract Club the best of luck in its future endeavours, and are sure the club will stay true to its motto of ’redefining humanity’.
