Red is a colour often associated with physical life force. It also exudes a strong positive energy. It is synonymous with the qualities of power, impulse and aggression. However, on 31st August, the colour red was associated with the humanitarian act of blood donation.
SUKARAKSHA -16, a blood donation camp, was held at the Alumni Centre on this day. The event was organised by the third year students of the Youth Red Cross of CEG. A fifteen-member crew from the Cancer Institute (WIA), Chennai, Adyar was also present and carried out the entire blood collection process. The collected blood was to be given to the patients at the Cancer Institute.
The proceedings started at 9 a.m. when the interested participants were asked to register with the Cancer Institute and the Youth Red Cross. There were a staggering 273 registrations! Once this was complete, the students underwent haemoglobin and pressure tests to make sure they were fit enough to donate blood. Those who passed the required tests donated blood under the careful supervision of the officials from the Cancer Institute. All through the day, there was a continuous buzz around the Alumni Centre as more and more students registered for this event. In the end, there were 163 students who donated blood. The blood donors were provided with certificates of appreciation and refreshments for their generosity. It was also very heartening to see many first time donors who promised to return in the future.
At the end of the event, the hall was filled not with beds, bags or students but with the immortal feeling of satisfaction as each student contemplated the impact of his or her contribution towards saving a human life.
