‘Quanta,’ the inter-college symposium of the Department of Material Science in College of Engineering, Guindy was held between March 8th and 10th, 2018. The inauguration on March 8th was presided by Dr. Swamynathan, Student Advisor of CEG, Mr. Seetharaman, Professor, VIT University and Dr. Pradeep Kumar, Coordinator, Department of Material Science at the Hall of Guiness. Later, the students clicked selfies near the apparent ‘Bodhi Tree’ in the Mechanical Department. (It is a common belief that anyone who studies a particular subject under this tree would surely clear the subject).
Students from various colleges and departments participated enthusiastically in the varied events and workshops conducted. Prizes were distributed during the valediction ceremony to the winners and three tickets for IPL 2018 were awarded to the champions of the event ‘Whistle Podu’.
The valediction ceremony was followed by the alumni meet which was organized for the first time in the department. This first alumni meet was one of the most anticipated events in the history of Material Science Department. Apart from the alumni who made it to the event, the others who couldn’t make it expressed their love through letters and videos. The former students then shared their experiences and the difficulties faced by them after graduation.
An alumnus narrated an incident where an auto driver told an IIT Madras student, “Thambi ozhunga padichirundhana Anna university la senthurkalamla”, (Son, had you studied properly, you could have joined Anna University), which had the audience in splits. This was followed by dinner at the Central Workshop, where the students and alumni bonded well thereby marking the first alumni meet a stupendous success.
