Photography for Beginners: The Ultimate Guide

Being one of the finest arts, photography holds a special place in the hearts of artists and patrons alike. Yet for a beginner, the constant barrage of tips and techniques for mastering the art of photography could be overwhelming.

Follow these five simple yet efficient tips to become a maestro in the art form.

1. Restrain the zoom-in instinct

For beginners with zoom lenses, it’s an eternal instinctive pull to zoom in and capture all the details. But sometimes, less is more. Reducing the ratio of positive to negative space can create an irresistible aura to any photograph. Often ridiculed by unaware souls, negative space can make or break an image. Channelizing negative space, which is imperative to retain the original portrait, could be the greatest compositional increment to any image.

2. Integrating elements from background and environment

The initial urge for most photographers is to capture the subject in a frame-filling composition, while completely ignoring the other possible elements in the background which could have potentially enhanced the composition of the image. Having a versatile mindset is critical for photographers to stand unique. Integrating compositional elements found in the background can re-create a story-telling effect, which would be difficult to frame in a close-up portrait. Elements like rain, snow, sunshine in the background can enhance the mood of the image.

3. The Rule of Thirds

Following pre-established guidelines can enhance your image incredibly. Over decades of observation, it has been revealed that positive space being concentrated at the dead center can kill the image ruthlessly. In order to neutralise this potentially dangerous situation, professionals came up with the guideline of thirds: wherein, it’s imperative to place the subject at either one of the thirds and reserving the rest to negative space. Following such simple yet efficient guidelines will bolster your photographic skills.

4. Enchanting eye-level

Art in simple words is a conflict of perspectives. To possess an aesthetic perspective is something an artist wishes for. Developing an eye for different perspectives might take years to master. For a beginner, the best way to start would be to graduate to the eye level. Getting in eye-level with the subject can lead to the greatest possible utilisation of the Bokeh which in turn can create an enchanting outlook to one’s image.

5. Experiment with creative control

Once you step up to get a DSLR, it’s time to step up your game. Move ahead and start experimenting with the creative controls of the gadget. Fear not the mistakes you make while, experimenting with something new. Stepping out of your comfort zone can be the greatest inflection point in your artistic career.

All things said, taking an initiative to lead and learn is your best bet if you want to be a professional photographer. Your drive to create and implement your perspectives into photography is the greatest tool that propels you forward. Regardless of how you approach the art, be sure to boost your drive to be accomplished and gain finesse in the art of photography!
