When Friendship Fades

It was there, and one day there wasn’t. We have all undergone a phase where we believe we’ll have an unbreakable bond. At first, it felt inconceivable that someone who knew our secrets, laughter, and heart would one day become a distant memory. The way our bond broke was not dramatic but a hushed whisper of nothing.

The hardest part about losing a friendship is the silence. Both of us took on growing responsibilities which led to a shifting of life priorities. So, our long meaningful discussions became brief and uninspired contact attempts. The foundation of texting turned into neglected replies followed by an end to invitations until an awareness emerged, about how someone who felt at home could transform into a stranger. The nostalgia after seeing the person, who was once your everything, walk by the street with an intentionally unnoticed look is as much as a reality check on how seasons change and how one must learn to accept it. You look at the photo frames holding memories, and ponder over what went wrong, what changed, and how you could let it happen. We were all there when we blamed ourselves for the outcome but one must also realise that it takes two of us to be where we are now.

Although the process brings enormous pain, one must accept that each friendship has expiration dates. Some friends remain for our development while others support us through our defined stages of life. And that’s okay. Letting go does not mean you must forget happy memories or disregard past love shared with others. It means to fully enjoy their presence without fearing their absence.

The downfall of a friendship produces teachings about love, grief, and an understanding of the transient nature of the world. Though the transition appears challenging, you will eventually have to move forward. During the process, one might even get lucky and rediscover a chance to build a deeper personal insight and a readiness to welcome future relationships. So, if you're going through a tough time, embrace yourself and consider it an opportunity for self-growth.
